Wading
in the winter presents some unique challenges to the angler beyond
simply staying warm. In addition to dealing with the cold, the angler
must contend with ice and snow. While just staying warm during normal
winter fishing is tough at best, an accidental spill can be life
threatening due to the speed which hypothermia can set in at mid-winter
temperatures.
As such,
anglers need to prepare for not only the cold weather, but to ensure
that they are safe. As for staying warm, there are two ways to accomplish
this, i.e., heavy neoprene waders which have inherent insulating
qualities or breathable waders with sufficient and proper layering
underneath. While neoprene may sweat in warmer weather, you are
unlikely to be active enough in the winter to work up a sweat.
Conversely,
while breathable waders help prevent sweating which can make the
angler cold, they have absolutely no insulation qualities. As such,
the angler must wear enough layers to combat the cold water. Layering
entails multiple pairs of wicking long underwear and socks in variable
thickness. However, the angler must be careful not to put too many
socks on which will in turn cut off your circulation.
While
not our favorite for normal use, "Bootfoot" waders are
easy to get on and off with cold hands and provide a higher level
of warmth than "Stockingfoot" waders with wading boots
due to the improved circulation and the ability to use more insulation
(room for socks!). In addition, many bootfoot waders available with
built-in insulation such as "Thinsulate" or removable
felt liners.
As for
safety, the absolute best (and we feel necessary) thing that a winter
angler can purchase is a pair of studded "Korkers". Korkers
fit on over your bootfoot (or wader boot) and lash in place with
a series if straps and buckles. In addition to providing a set of
aggressive "Carbide" spikes, the soles are hard rubber
and as such will not allow snow to build up beneath your feet that
can be uncomfortable and dangerous.
Lastly,
a sturdy collapsible wading staff such as those offered by "Folstaff"
provides the angler with an extra level of safety in regard to feeling
around the bottom for obstacles, testing the ice, checking the depth
of the snow (and what is underneath it) and support when crossing
the stream. No serious winter wader should be without a top quality
wading staff - your life is more valuable than that!
