Wader Tech Tips - Breathable vs. Lightweight

The terms "Breathable" and "Lightweight" are often used in regard to modern non-Neoprene waders. While "Breathable" waders are arguably always "Lightweight", the same cannot be said for all "Lightweight" waders being "Breathable"! As such, without a full understanding of the differences an uninformed angler could purchase something that was not what they wanted.

For the sake of this discussion, "Breathable" also implies "Waterproof" (not true with other types of garments). In regard to waders, "Breathable" refers to a characteristic found in products made with materials such as Gore-Tex, H2no, StormShield, etc., that allows vapors to escape without water getting in. The benefit is that the angler remains dry not only from outside elements, but from perspiration.

"Lightweight" on the other hand refers to a garment that is physically light. Products made from thin "Rubberized Nylon" although "Lightweight" could not be considered "Breathable". While physical lightness is a desired trait, depending on the circumstances "Breathable" may be more important. As such, anglers looking for a wader that will keep them from overheating should look for "Breathable".

Conversely, anglers simply looking for an inexpensive wader that is physically light (and do not care about staying dry inside) could save a lot of money by buying a low-priced "Lightweight" but not "Breathable" wader. So, make sure you know what you want and what you are looking at before you buy your next pair of waders!
