With well over 10,000 fish (primarily rainbows with the rare Brown) averaging between 14-20" per mile for a full 3 miles of wadeable water, the "Juan" is considered by most fishermen "in the know" to be one of the top 3 (1, 2, or 3 depending on who you ask!) tailwaters in the country along with the Green and Bighorn!

With water temperatures in the low 50's throughout the year, stable flows, and a broad range of midges, scuds and aquatic worms, the "Juan" is a nymph fisherman's dream! Additionally, the dry fly die-hards can cast tiny (#20-24) flies to pods of unusually large fish found sipping midges in remote back channels during the mid-morning.

With the upper 3 miles of river closed to all watercraft, the "quality trout water" section of the "Juan" is arguably the best public wading water in the country! In addition, you can always get away from the crowds by putting in at the "Texas Hole" and drifting downstream to one of the well-maintained public boat launches.

Now for the bad news (what little there is…); The "quality trout water" section of the "Juan" can be extremely crowded on any given day. However, those willing to fish early and late in the day and those willing to hike to the less accessible stretches of river and side channels, can find themselves very much alone while still within site of the masses!
