With
a trout over twenty inches for every seven feet of river, the "Beav"
is arguably (and we're being conservative!) the finest trophy trout
river in the US! Although predominately a brown trout fishery, the
"Beav" also offers some very large rainbows (4+ pounds)
in the upper sections of the river.
Additionally,
the "Beav" boasts fish counts of over 6,000 trout per
mile! Although not overwhelming by western standards (the Bighorn,
Green, San Juan and Colorado at Lees Ferry have over 10,000), at
approximately 1/4 of their size, this is a whole lot of fish for
what would be considered a small river or large stream!
Primarily
known as a nymphing river these days, the "Beav" also
offers some strong caddis hatches as well as an amazing Cranefly
hatch that occurs in late summer and brings the big boys to the
surface! Additionally, on overcast days if you are good with a streamer
in tight quarters (that's an understatement!), you can really move
some hogs!
Now
for the bad news (what little there is
); Although everyone
hooks fish on the "Beav", it takes patience and skill
to land the real big boys on a regular basis. It is not unusual
to watch someone chase a large trout 100 or so yards downstream
only to see him or her come back by 10 minutes later mumbling obscenities!
Is it worth it? Many fisherman think so!
