With
over 10,000 "hot" rainbows averaging between 12-18"
per mile for almost 15 miles and no competing species, the "Ferry"
may be the finest (and possibly only) "pure" Rainbow fishery
in the country! The "Ferry" boasts water temperatures
in the low 50's and stable flows throughout the year, making it
a near perfect environment for trout!
Having
approximately 35 documented species of midges (how
can you tell the difference?), abundant scuds and the aquatic worms
found in most tailwaters, the "Ferry" is a nymph fisherman's
dream! Additionally, you can cast tiny (#20-24) dries to large pods
of fish sipping midges over the gravel bars at first light and the
many back eddies during the day.
In
addition to the fishing, the "Ferry" offers some of the
most dramatic scenery found anywhere in the US. Throughout the 14-mile
canyon, the river winds its way past 500-foot red sandstone cliffs
that are home to 800+ year-old Native American rock art. At each
bend, the river disappears from view behind the jetboat leaving
the canyon walls in its wake.
Now
for the bad news (what little there is
); The "Ferry"
is first and foremost a nymphing river. Although always possible,
dry fly opportunities are limited at best and on some days, virtually
non-existent. Additionally, the days of the fabled "Steelhead"
sized Bows are in the past. Is it worth it? Many fishermen, myself
included, think so!
