As a lifelong New Englander, I have
a special attachment to small remote Fly Fishing ponds! Often overlooked by the
modern Fly Fisherman, small ponds offer a kind of solitude (e.g., wildlife, quiet,
etc.) not always found in our increasingly crowded rivers and some of the most
reliable dry fly fishing to be found anywhere. In addition, with a few noted exceptions
(e.g., Rapid River, etc.), small ponds offer the angler his/her best chance at
seeing large wild and native Brook Trout in their natural surroundings!
As such, you will find a canoe on
my truck roof from mid-May through the end of July! Like most New Englanders,
I have spent years using canoes that although great for river use, were not well
suited to pond fishing (e.g., too heavy to comfortably carry long distances, too
long to easily carry down winding tree-lined trails, too flat to effectively anchor,
and ineffective for chasing rising fish due to poor tracking characteristics!)
After purchasing a Scott
Drifter "Double-Ender" for personal use, I believe I have found the
ultimate "Stillwater Fly Fishing Boat" for small New England trout ponds!
At just 60 lbs. (and outfitted with an Ash Carrying Yoke) the Drifter is a breeze
to load on and off the truck as well as carry to the water. In addition, the 14'4"
length is easy to maneuver in tight trails without sacrificing stability due to
the 42" width! Lastly the triple-keel design offers optimum anchoring (it
will not blow around) and phenomenal tracking! Why
