 In
addition to the Kennebec River, there are a number of other rivers and streams
in the area that are worth trying. Originating from Flagstaff Lake in Eustis/Sugerloaf
area, the Dead River travels east to its confluence with the Kennebec less than
one hour north of the shop.
From
Long Falls Dam at Flagstaff to Grand Falls above Spencer Stream is one the few
"Rainbow" fisheries in the state. Although their origin is unclear (accidental
hatchery escapees or deliberate illegal stockies), these fish can reach trophy
sizes. Try the "Big Eddy" camping area for a shot at one of Maine's
newest arrivals!
From
Grand Falls down to The Forks, the angler can experience miles of
wilderness wade fishing (and guided raft fishing) for native Brook
Trout and Salmon as well as occasional wild rainbows, wild browns
and the stocked splake (up from Wyman Lake). Be sure to check the
water levels before heading out to the Dead to avoid the unfishable
recreational releases.
The
small rivers and streams feeding the Kennebec and Dead such as the
Sandy in Madison/Norridgewock, Carrabasset in North Anson/Solon,
Wesserunsett in Skowhegan, Austin and Jackson in Bingham, Cold and
Moxie just above The Forks, and Enchanted, Chase, Salmon, and Spencer
in the upper river all hold some level of salmonids.
