Another
industry leading product that unfortunately does not enjoy the popularity
here in northern New England that it does elsewhere in the country
(we believe that this is due to a lack of "Pro Shops"
as opposed to anything else), RIO is rapidly gaining a reputation
for innovative and high-quality "Specialty" Fly Lines.
If you have yet to try a RIO line, there is no better time then
right now!
One of
just a hand-full of vendors whom make their own Fly Lines (companies
such as Orvis and LL Bean sell lines made by other companies), RIO
is currently 3rd in sales behind Scientific Anglers and regionally
strong Cortland. However, we at Kennebec River Outfitters would
not be a bit surprised to see RIO take the #2 slot sometime in the
not so far future (they have the momentum to do it!)
Note:
The lines listed below represent only what we normally stock. RIO
manufactures many fine Fly Lines that are not mentioned below. In
addition to adding new lines to our standard inventory on a regular
basis, we will gladly order any RIO products that you are looking
for.
RIO
Grand ($54.00) - A "State-of-the-Art" floating
fly line that incorporates RIO's proprietary "SlickShooter"
process, a "2-Stage" taper (i.e., Front Taper, Belly,
Rear Taper, Body, Back Taper), and integrated "Welded"
loop (for Loop-to-Loop connections), this slightly heavier than
advertised fly line is designed for today's modern Fast-Action
fly rods!
|
WindCutter
($50.00) - Arguably the winner of more "Distance Competitions"
than any other fly line on the market, RIO's WindCutter is designed
to not only cast extreme distances, but also to present the
fly delicately (not an easy task for a "Performance"
fly line!)
|
AquaLux
($52.00) - A "Clear" Intermediate sinking fly
line, AquaLux lines are the line of choice for those casting
"Emergers" (or nymphs) for fish suspended near the
surface in Stillwater.
|
| Deep
7 ($56.00) - While not for everyone (or as a "General
Purpose" sinking line), Deep 7 fly line has a "Sink
Rate" of 7-9 ips (Inches Per Second) making it one of the
(if not the) fastest sinking freshwater fly lines on the market!
Designed for 7-Weight fly rods, this line can be used on rods
between 5 and 8 weight. In addition, due to the thin diameter,
Deep 7 casts like a rocket! If getting down deep and fast is
a requirement, this is the line for you! ("Bob's Choice")
Note:
After years of unsuccessfully searching for the "perfect"
fly line for dredging giant "Sculpin" patterns through
those slow moving, deep and dark holes in New England's larger
rivers, I have finally stopped looking!

Density
Compensated 7' and 15' Sinking Tip ($54.00) - A "Specialty"
sinking tip fly line available in 4 to 10-weight, DC 7' and
15' Sinking Tip fly lines use graduated density and a tapered
tip to create a sinking tip line that won't sag in the middle.
The 7' version provides and alternative to those whom fish
medium size streams and rivers and feel that a 5' tip is too
short and a 10' tip is too long. The 15' version on the other
hand provides a greater level of sink on large, deep and/or
fast moving rivers. Available in Type 3 - 6 "Sink Rates",
these lines offer the angler an option to the standard 10'
sink tip lines available from most manufacturers. ("Bob's
Choice")
Note:
For those who desire a "High Water" line for
use during spring run-off, try a 15' Type VI in 6 or 7-weight.
For those looking for an "All-Around" Sink Tip,
try a 7' Type III in 5-weight. I use both and wouldn't be
without either!

Density
Compensated 24' Sinking Tip ($56.00) - A "Specialty"
sinking tip fly line designed for situations such where a long
tip is required and a floating running line is optimal (i.e.,
moving water), the DC 24' Sinking Tip fly lines use graduated
density and a tapered tip to create a sinking tip line that
won't sag in the middle. Available in 150 - 600 gn (Grain),
these are the lines of choice for those pursuing Atlantic Salmon,
Striped Bass, etc., in large rivers!
|
| VersiTip
Interchangeable Tip ($115.00) - Our favorite "Multi-Tip"
fly line, RIO's VersiTip comes with a floating "Running
Line", five 15' "Interchangeable" tips (i.e.,
Floating, Clear Intermediate, and Type 3, Type 6, and Type 8
Sinking), and a Nylon and Mesh "Tip Wallet". Based
on the WindCutter fly line, these lines utilize a heavy-duty
"Non-Hinging" (7-Weight and up) or "Welded"
(6-Weight and down) loop system that allows for quick tip changes
and better than average "Castability". Especially
attractive in the heavier line weights where extra spools are
both costly and bulky, and "finesse" is not critical,
these lines are not only convenient but they represent a real
savings over the traditional "Extra Spool and Line"
scenario used by most anglers. This is the ideal line for Atlantic
Salmon, Pacific Salmon and Steelhead! ("Bob's Choice")
Note:
For those who enjoy fishing for "Stripers" on
the lower Kennebec River, these lines represent a real advantage
over traditional "Saltwater" lines that employ an
Intermediate "Running Line". While the Intermediate
Running Line is preferred for "Off-Shore" fishing
(i.e., it is less effected by the waves), floating Running
Line allows the angler to better control their line in moving
water.
|
Steelhead
& Atlantic Salmon ($54.00) - Our favorite "Atlantic
Salmon" (and most recently Great Lakes "Steelhead")
floating fly line, this line employs a long "Belly"
(33') and "Rear Taper" (24') to facilitate lengthy
Roll-Casting and efficient Mending. In addition, a special "Bullet"
taper attached to the end of the Front taper helps deliver large
flies such as Bombers!
|
| LumaLux
($62.00) - A "Glow-in-the-Dark" fly line, LumaLux
allows the angler to track their line at night! LumaLux lines
are available in floating "Freshwater" models in 4
to 6-weight (Weight Forward and Double Taper), floating "Saltwater"
models in 7 to 13-weight (Weight Forward), and Intermediate
"Saltwater" models in 7 to 13-weight. The Freshwater
lines have a medium length front taper (8') and long belly (30')
making them perfect for Stillwater use! ("Bob's Choice")
Note:
For those who enjoy fishing Maine's mid-summer "Hex"
hatch, these lines represent a real advantage over those available
in the past. In addition to being designed to throw larger
flies (medium length front taper) long distances (long belly),
with a simple "Charge" from a Camera Flash, these
lines can be seen well after dark acting like a "Pointer"
to your fly!
|
Striper
15 Ft VersiTip Coldwater ($115.00) - A "Multi-Tip"
fly line designed for the off-shore "Striper" angler,
this line comes with an Intermediate "Running Line",
four "Interchangeable" tips (i.e., Clear Intermediate,
and Type 3, Type 6, and Type 8 Sinking), and a Nylon and Mesh
"Tip Wallet". These lines utilize a heavy-duty "Non-Hinging"
loop system that allows for quick tip changes and better than
average "Castability".
|
Striper
26 Ft Density Coldwater ($60.00) - Our favorite "Striper"
line, this "Specialty" sinking tip fly line, uses
an Intermediate "Running Line" and a graduated density
sinking tip to create a line that won't sag in the middle and
won't be negatively effected by rolling waves or cold water!
Available in 250, 300, 350, 400, 450 and 500 grain models, these
are the line of choice for New England "Striper" fishing
either from shore or a boat.
